Advances in Remote Sensing of Snow and Ice for Modelling the Runoff Process
نویسنده
چکیده
Satellite monitoring of the seasonal snow cover in the visible range of the spectrum has been constantly improved thanks to a better spatial resolution. Sensors were introduced enabling snow, clouds and glacier ice to be distinguished. Thanks to refined data processing combined with a Geographic Information System (GIS), a method was developed to restore satellite images of the snow cover partially obscured by clouds, thus improving the frequency of usable scenes. Each progress resulted in an improvement of the performance of the SRM snowmelt runoff model, because the snow coverage mapped by satellites is used as a direct input and because new methods of data evaluation were developed. Among the presented examples are: Regional distribution of the snow water equivalent in the basin Rhine-Felsberg (3250 km 2 , 562 3425 m a.s.l.), runoff modelling in the basin Rhône-Sion (3371 km 2 , 491 4634 m a.s.l., 17% glacier area), evaluation of the effect of climate change on winter snow accumulation, on snow covered areas and runoff in the basin Rhine-Felsberg.

Snow cover area is one of the most important criteria to calculate snow melt runoff. This can have an effect on the biology of the plant and the environment of a region. Using the catchment basin physical characteristic to calculate snow cover area is a conventional method, though its accuracy is not good enough. Most of the useful methods in calculating snow cover area are based on satellite i...

متن کاملMapping of Snow Cover and Glaciers with High Resolution Remote Sensing Data for Improved Runoff Modelling
The study presents investigations of the runoff from snow and ice, carried out in the high alpine basin of the Rhône river at Sion (3371 km2, 491 -4634 m a.s.l.). Using satellite remote sensing data, features like the snow coverage in the whole basin, the gradually decreasing snow coverage on glaciers and the area of exposed ice have been mapped. The periodical monitoring of the basin is based ...
متن کاملPrecision snow cover and glacier mapping for runoff modelling in a high alpine basin
The runoff regime of high alpine basins will be affected in response to global warming not only by the seasonal snow cover but also by glaciers. Runoff peaks due to snowmelt will partially be shifted from the summer to the winter. The glacier melt will supply a higher amount of meltwater until glaciers finally disappear, if the temperature keeps rising. In order to evaluate quantitatively this ...
